    Lycette Nelson

    Lycette Nelson
Lycette Nelson is an attorney licensed to practice in New Jersey and New York with more than 12 years of experience in the areas of disability, mental health law, housing, civil litigation, and international human rights. She is admitted to practice in the United States District Court of New Jersey and of the U.S. District Courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. She is also accredited by the Veterans Administration to represent veterans and their families in matters related to VA benefits.

Lycette Nelson is a fierce advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and has spent her entire career as an attorney working for full inclusion and equality. She is excited to continue this commitment in opening the Law Office of Lycette Nelson and to expand her client base to include veterans, LGBT people, and adoptive and non-traditional families.

From 2010-2014, Lycette served as the Litigation Director for the Mental Disability Advocacy Center based in Budapest, Hungary, where she supervised attorneys working in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Russia in cases related to guardianship, mistreatment and abuse in institutions, the right to live in the community, the right to an inclusive education and access to justice for adults and children with intellectual disabilities and consumers of mental health services.

In 2008-2009, Lycette worked as an Associate Attorney at the Mental Hygiene Legal Services in Staten Island, New York, where she represented clients in acute and long-term psychiatric hospitals in matters related to involuntary commitment, involuntary treatment, mandated outpatient treatment, and guardianship.

From 2003-2008, Lycette served as an attorney and Interim Supervising Attorney on the Adult Home Advocacy Project at MFY Legal Services, Inc., in New York City. At MFY, she represented seniors and people with mental disabilities in matters related to housing, benefits, and services in both individual cases in state courts and large impact cases related to the right of people with disabilities to live in community settings and to receive services without discrimination in federal courts.

Lycette received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, where she was a fellow in the Urban Morgan Institute for Human Rights and a member of the editorial staff of the Human Rights Quarterly. She is a member of the Elder Law and Disability Section of the New Jersey Bar Association and of the Elder Law and Special Needs Section. She is a volunteer with the Hudson Country Court, serving as a member of the Juvenile Conference Committee.

Prior to attending law school, Lycette was the Executive Director of a non-profit organization advocating for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, Stonewall Cincinnati. From 2005-2007, she served as a member of the board of Hudson Pride in Jersey City. As an adoptive parent in a same-sex bi-national couple, she has first-hand experience of the issues facing same-sex and adoptive families in achieving full legal protection of their family relationships.

Lycette is a fluent French speaker.
